Vision Forum is proud to announce the release of Fredrik Sweger‘s monograph “Nothing to See.” It is a photographic reflection on tourism. Sweger shows us tourists in a way they have never been seen before. It is technically documentary photography. But by breaking every convention of that genre, Sweger manages to bring into question our whole ontological endeavour. In short, it hurts in a way that art should. In Freddie Ross’s text in the book, we can read:
“The portrayal of the tourist is rarely favorable in art or pop culture. As I see it there are two main character tropes when it comes to depicting the typical tourist.Either they are a rich, entitled asshole, or an oafish, uncultured buffoon. The criti-cally acclaimed TV show The White Lotus contains a colorful cast of various versions of the former, while versions of the latter in the Swedish classic Sällskapsresan. Another, perhaps more widely known example of the buffoon is Karl Pilkington in the travel documentary series An Idiot Abroad. In this series, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, we follow “the round-headed buffoon” Karl Pilkington as he travels around the world to see the wonders of the world, and he is hilariously unimpressed by the whole thing.”
Welcome to book release and a conversation between Fredrik Sweger and Per Huttner. Saturday, March 28, 4pm.
